A Century of Surboards and Collectibles on Offer
HONOLULU - (May, 2011) -- Pre-registration has opened for the
Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by
Quiksilver Waterman Collection, and bidders from around the world are lining up for what promises to be an epic assortment of Hawaiian surf collectibles. The hammer will drop on Saturday, July 23, at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii.
Held every other year since it began in 2001, the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction has seen more than $2.6 Million worth of surf collectibles change hands. Auction curator Randy Rarick expects bidding to hit a fever pitch this year with the world's top collectors already on board. Bidding will be limited to only 250 attending bidders, however online bids will be accepted in conjunction with the live webcast of the event.
"We have collectors coming from Japan, France, Brazil, Portugal, the U.S., and a huge contingent from Australia this year," said Rarick. "Australians are serious about their surfing and know their history. In fact, they played a big part in revolutionary surfboard designs and that will be highlighted in this year's collection. With their dollar so strong right now, and their natural affinity for all things Hawaii, they're going to be in it to win it."
Rarick has begun unfurling his "Peek of the Week" teasers and promises to roll out generations of highly coveted auction items over the course of the coming months.
"This auction will cover the gamut of surfboards," says Rarick. "From early plank and laminated wood boards, to Tom Blake paddleboards, Hawaiian big wave 'elephant guns', and early day pro rider boards including those of Shaun Tomson (below) and Larry Bertlemann.
